We did it!! After 24 gruelling hours on watt bikes, we have gone and broken a Guinness World Record and raised over £10,000 for The Christie. The event was a fantastic success, with hundreds of people coming along to support us (well we hope it
was to support us and not just to eat loads of free Soreen!) and we really are buzzing in the office now that we can say we have broken a world record.Everyone that took part has done their bit not only for the record but also for The Christie, who were overwhelmed
by the support for the event. They had a presence at the event all weekend and one of the representatives even came back on Saturday just to jump on one of our bikes and do her bit for the Soreen Totaliser (pictured far right)! We had former Olympic athlete Iwan Thomas (pictured middle, left) along for a few hours at the start of the event. He absolutely loved the event, jumping on a bike for an hour and even singing to Gemma Caswell, who was celebrating her birthday by getting all sweaty raising money for The Christie (thanks for putting the birthday plans on hold for us by the way Gemma!).
We managed to generate enough energy to break the record several times over and, with the amount of electricity we generated, we could have powered the entire Empire State Building (only for one minute but it’s a BIG building!).
We must say a
massive thank you to everyone involved, you guys were great! The guys doing 24 hours were fantastic (Carl pictured left) and we even had one cyclist who turned up to do half and hour then decided to push himself and so another 20 hours!! Unbelievable commitment! We had some very young people cycling away which was great to see and the mini-watt bikes that we had for the kids unable to take part in the main record were always being used. It was great to see everyone getting into the spirit of the event and really enjoying themselves. The venue staff were fantastic so thanks to all at The Velodrome and who knows… maybe Soreen could become record breakers again; just need a new record to smash. Any ideas?!...

Hi all - would be good to see some feedback from the 24 hours; top 10 power generators in 30/60 mins, 24hr boys wattage, ebb & flow of wattage over 24hrs, Iwan's wattage (!), when the certificates are due out, etc, etc. Many thanks
ReplyDeleteecho David's sentiments!
ReplyDeletehello to soreen world record team
ReplyDeletei am very sorry but you fail the record! you absolute did not fit to the regulars of guinness!
you did not produce electric energy! you meassured body power which is a big differenz! and you did use more than the double of the alowed bikes!
regular of guinness
1. you have to use standart street bikes!
2. you have to produce electric energy with an alternator which is mounted to the back wheel!
3. you have to logg all the data to a database! voltage, amperes, watts,... for each bike!
4. a maximum of 21 bikes is allowed!
,.... and much more regulars!
so do you think you fit???
i can make 200Watt AVG during a long time on a bike! if i have to do this on a pedal powered generator so it would be roundabout 70 - 80 Watt
if i take your 82000Wh bring it down to 21 bikes so you have 34440Wh then we calculate the differenc between body power and electric power so it would be roundabout 13776Wh so nearly the same then the existing record! would be a interessting match if you do it right!
if you have questions on this please contact me on heinzle.thomas@gmx.at i also have send a mail to guinness about this fault!
regards
Thomas
I agree entirely with Thomas, they have simply not produced electrical energy! They have broken the record for The Most Human Body Power produced over 24hrs.
ReplyDeleteThe lack of distinction between body power and electric energy is very frustrating, especially when we are working so hard to educate students about energy conservation and get them involved in their own record attempt. This means sourcing equipment, dealing with the required data logging and fulfilling ALL of Guinness' conditions for the record.
Perhaps Soreen and Guinness could make a clear and separate distinction between the two records?
Does anyone know what the true electrical energy record is for 24hrs? I think the previous record was also set on the Watt bikes measuring body power?
If anyone has any advice or useful links on data logging volts, amps and watts for 21 bikes it would be very welcome?
Any company keen on sponsoring & getting involved in our record attempt would be most welcome.
